Arlington Wins the Light Bulb Challenge!
Over the weekend of March 21-22nd, the Energy Smackdown™ teams competed to replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents—measured as total wattage saved.
Overall results…
- The three teams retired 888 incandescent bulbs.
- Which translates to a savings of 60,000 kWh electricity per year, 450,000 kWh over the life of the bulbs (7.5 years)
- Enough electricity to light 87 homes each year, 650 homes over the life of the bulbs
- A dollar savings of $9,739 each year, $72,000 over the life of the bulbs
- The teams reduced annual CO2 emissions by 24 tons, 178 tons over the life of the bulbs
- 33% of those bulbs were delivered using carpool, bike, walking, or public transport
Team results...
- First place: Arlington A-Team members retired 486 incandescents, a total of 25,356 watts saved. 22% were replaced via alternate transport for a total of 31,386 points
- Second place: Team Medford retired 238 bulbs for a total of 12,512 watts saved, 31% were replaced via alternate transport for a total of 17,402 points
- Third place: Cambridge Energy Busters retired 164 bulbs for a total of 8,528 watts saved, 67% were replaced via alternate transport for a total of 15,748 points
